“Most people tell you that’s just old age, and some of it is. But a lot of what we call ‘old’ is really pain, and pain can be helped.”

I · The problem

You can see him changing. Nobody tells you what to do about it.

Everyone says “he’s just old”

He’s stiff in the morning. He waits at the bottom of the stairs. He turns for home halfway round the walk. It all gets called age, so nobody looks closer. But dogs are built to hide pain, and slowing down is often how it shows.

His back legs are giving out

He slips on the kitchen floor. He can’t jump into the car anymore. The ramps, beds, and supplements online cost a fortune, and you can’t tell which ones actually help.

You’re scared of getting the end wrong

Too early, or a day too late. Everyone says “you’ll know”, and you’re afraid you won’t. And every vet visit feels like a bill you can’t predict.

It’s one story: the small signs get called age, the pain goes unseen, he does less and less, and the hard questions arrive with no plan. My Dog Longevity breaks that story at the first step, by teaching you to see what he can’t tell you.

V · What this book gets right

The honest version, before you buy

What it does well

It turns “keep an eye on him” into things you can actually do: a five-minute weekly check, a grip path across the kitchen floor, the right questions for your vet, a fair way to judge his good days. Most of it is cheap and done at home. Every chapter ends with one small thing to try this week, and every fact has a source at the back.

What it does not promise

It can’t promise him more years. Nobody honest can. It isn’t a vet, and it doesn’t diagnose, treat, or give doses. What it does is help you see problems sooner and work with your vet instead of guessing, so the years you have are good ones.

VI · Is it for you

Written for a specific owner

This book is for you if

  • Your dog is going grey and slowing down
  • You’ve wondered, “Is this age, or is he hurting?”
  • You want to keep him comfortable without spending a fortune
  • You want to be ready for the hard questions, not blindsided by them

It is not for you if

  • You want a miracle supplement or a promise of extra years
  • You’re looking for a way to skip the vet
  • You need a treatment plan for a specific illness (that’s your vet’s job)
Walt Bennett
“Most of what makes an old dog’s life better is small, cheap, and done at home. You just have to know what to look for, and work with your vet instead of guessing.”
Walt Bennett · Host of the Walt Bennett channel

Walt makes videos for people who share their homes with older dogs. This book collects the habits from the channel in one place, in plain words, with the sources at the back.

Walt is not a vet, and he will always tell you when something is a vet’s job.

VII · Questions

Before you ask

Is this instead of my vet?

No. It helps you work with your vet: what to watch for at home, what to write down, what to ask, and which signs mean go now. It never diagnoses or gives doses. Every health topic ends with the questions to take to your vet.

My dog is only seven. Is it too early?

Big dogs age faster than small ones, so “senior” can start anywhere from about 5 to 12 depending on size. Chapter 1 shows where your dog is. Starting early is the point: small changes are easiest to catch, and fix, while he’s still doing well.

He’s already very old, or ill. Will it still help?

Yes. Habits 4 to 6 are about comfort, calm nights, quality of life, and the end, with a fair way to judge good days from bad ones. It’s written for exactly where you are now.

Will I have to buy a lot of gear or supplements?

No. Most of the fixes are cheap things like rugs, yoga mats, night lights, and a routine. The book tells you which supplements have real evidence behind them and which don’t, and has a whole chapter on spending wisely.

Can I read it on my tablet or phone?

Yes. The book comes as a PDF and an EPUB. The PDF looks like the printed page and prints cleanly at home. The EPUB is made for phones and e-readers like Kindle, Kobo, and Apple Books, and the text resizes to whatever is easiest for you. The 5 bonuses come as print-ready PDFs, each with an EPUB too.

How is it delivered? Is checkout secure?
